📧🏊‍♀️ How your email finds Coach Kristina…

Good news: Coach Kristina isn’t answering emails.

She’s probably in a pool, a lake, or somewhere training for her next swim.

That’s why Swim Fit Alaska has office staff.

While Coach Kristina is busy coaching lessons and logging miles in the water, Ashley is the one keeping up with the inbox, schedules, and all the behind-the-scenes details.

So when you send an email, there’s a pretty good chance Coach Kristina is swimming while Ashley is typing the reply. 😆

🌊 Because everyone should stick to what they do best.

🦦💙 “We finally knew what to do at the pool.”

One of the biggest challenges for parents isn’t getting to the pool—it’s knowing what to do once you’re there.

That’s exactly why we created the Baby Otter Infant & Toddler Water Foundations series.

This parent completed Levels 1, 2, and 3 and discovered what so many families tell us: each level builds on the last, creating a clear roadmap for water confidence, safety, and skill development.

No more guessing.
No more random pool play.
Just simple, age-appropriate activities that help your child become more comfortable and confident in the water—one step at a time.

Thank you for trusting us to be part of your family’s swimming journey! 🥰

🎥 “They cried, so we stopped.”

It sounds compassionate.

But if every lesson ends the moment a child cries, what are we really teaching?

Children cry for lots of reasons:
💧 They’re frustrated.
💧 They’re unsure.
💧 They’re working through something difficult.
💧 They’re learning a brand-new skill.

If we stop every time they become uncomfortable, we accidentally teach them that discomfort means it’s time to quit.

At Swim Fit Alaska, safety always comes first. But we also understand that growth often happens just outside a child’s comfort zone. Our goal isn’t to prevent every tear—it’s to help swimmers build confidence, resilience, and trust while working through challenges in a safe and supportive environment.

Because sometimes the biggest lesson isn’t swimming.

Sometimes it’s learning, “I was scared, I did it anyway, and I was okay.”

🏊‍♀️ Technique Tuesday: Breaststroke Kick 🏊‍♀️

The breaststroke kick is where the power happens.

Many swimmers focus on the pull, but an efficient breaststroke starts with a strong, well-timed kick. Think heels in, sweep out, snap together, then glide. When the kick is done correctly, you’ll move farther with less effort and maintain better rhythm throughout the stroke.

✅ Heels to your hips
✅ Feet turned outward
✅ Sweep and press the water back
✅ Snap your legs together
✅ Hold a streamlined glide

One of the most common mistakes? Rushing the kick and skipping the glide. Remember: the glide is where you get to enjoy the power you just created.

What’s the most challenging part of breaststroke for you—the kick, timing, or breathing?

There’s a lot of life happening outside the pool deck. 😂

One weekend, Coach Kristina is on the North Shore racing through 6–8 foot waves.

The next? She’s back home teaching swimming lessons like normal… and then casually decides to enter her very first horse show with Epic. 🐴😂

Swimming is obviously a HUGE part of her life — coaching, teaching, training and racing — but it’s not the only part.

Sometimes it’s open water and rough seas. 🌊
Sometimes it’s hours on a pool deck. 🏊‍♀️
Sometimes it’s a barn, a horse and trying something completely new. 🐴

We talk a lot at Swim Fit Alaska about getting outside your comfort zone, trying hard things, being willing to be a beginner and continuing to show up.

Apparently Coach Kristina takes that advice pretty seriously. 😂

Life is way more fun when you let yourself do ALL the things. 💙

Shutdown and meltdowns can look similar from the outside, but they’re not the same thing.

A child who is shutting down may need less input, more time, and space to recover. A child experiencing a meltdown may need support, safety, and help regulating their nervous system.

When we learn to recognize the difference, we can respond with understanding instead of frustration.

At Swim Fit Alaska, we believe behavior is communication. The more we understand what a child is experiencing, the better we can support them—in and out of the water. 💙

What signs help you tell the difference between a shutdown and a meltdown?

😂🏊‍♂️ How to Spot a Triathlete at the Pool

If a swimmer walks onto the pool deck carrying enough gear to open a small swim shop…

…there’s a good chance they’re a triathlete.

Wetsuit? Check.
Garmin? Check.
Backup goggles? Check.
Nutrition plan for a 45-minute swim? Check.

Meanwhile, the competitive swimmers showed up with goggles and emotional damage.

This post is made with love. Triathletes are some of the most dedicated athletes out there… but they do make themselves easy to spot. 😆

🌊🦦 The Baby Otter Program is here! 🦦🌊

The strongest swimmers don’t start by swimming.

They start by learning to be comfortable in the water, building trust, developing confidence, and creating a foundation that lasts a lifetime.

Our Baby Otter Program is designed for infants and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years, helping families introduce water skills in a fun, positive, and developmentally appropriate way.

💙 Water Comfort
🛟 Safety Awareness
⭐ Confidence Building

Because before a child learns to swim, they learn how to feel safe and successful in the water.

If you’ve ever learned a new swim skill, you know exactly how this feels. 😅

One lesson you’re gliding across the pool feeling like an Olympic swimmer. The next lesson your breathing is off, your timing is gone, and you’re wondering if you’ve ever swum before in your life.

The good news? That’s usually a sign you’re learning.

Progress in swimming isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes it looks more like two steps forward, one step back, and then suddenly everything clicks.

Keep showing up. The breakthrough is usually closer than you think. 🏊‍♂️💙
