Wellness Wednesday #4

ā€œRecognition: Pressure & Identityā€

When I was a younger athlete, I was always scared to make mistakes. Whether it was in the pool, on the football field, the basketball court, or the track, there was always a slight fear in the back of my mind that ā€œif I mess this up, I’ll ruin this race/game/play/etcā€¦ā€ There were moments and times that I was so caught up in THIS mindset, that regardless of how positively I thought of a situation, it still would never leave the back of my mind… I was finding my identity AS my sport… I was so caught up in the pressure of the situation at hand that it would affect my races or my play, not JUST in competition, but even in practice sometimes! I wasn’t recognizing or acknowledging the fact that I had coaches who cared for my overall well-being, physically AND mentally.

I didn’t fully recognize the importance of understanding pressure until I was older. I didn’t fully recognize the importance of understanding that my identity isn’t defined by stats on a scoresheet, times in the pool or on the track. My identity is defined by who I am as a PERSON!

It took me a good amount of time to realize and recognize that my identity isn’t what I accomplished within sports, but sports are part of who I am and who I’ve been molded into. Once I understood these things- my mental health has improved tremendously. I feel far more confident in my abilities, because I understand that ā€œfailureā€ or ā€œmistakesā€ are PART of the process, not the ENTIRE process. These things didn’t define me as an athlete, but helped shape me as the person that I am today!

Athletes- take time to recognize that you are not defined by your sport. Take time to recognize that there will be times when you feel like the pressure’s on, but take it as a compliment. Take time to understand that your identity is MORE than tallies on a stat sheet or the time on the clock. Take time to recognize that your MIND matters more than your physical abilities, and you have to train it just as much as the rest of your body.

Today we pause to honor the brave. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø We remember those who gave everything for our freedom. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Three Pillars Performance will be closed this evening to observe Memorial Day. We'll see you tomorrow, ready to train and honor their legacy through our commitment to excellence.
