One of the biggest mistakes parents make when giving directions has nothing to do with listening.

It has to do with attention.

If your child is focused on a tablet, the TV, a toy, or something else, there's a good chance they didn't hear half of what you said in the first place.

Before you give directions, get their eyes first.

It's a simple adjustment, but it can make a huge difference.

After more than 40 years in martial arts, I've learned that many behavior challenges aren't discipline problems—they're communication problems.

What strategies have worked best for your family when it comes to getting your child's attention?

One of the biggest myths about confidence is that confidence comes first.

It doesn't.

Confidence comes after the hard work.

After the push-ups.
After the repetitions.
After the moments when quitting would have been easier.

Every challenge completed teaches a child something important:

"I can do hard things."

That's where real confidence comes from.

At Phoenix Martial Arts, belt promotions are a big deal.

A new belt isn't awarded because a student has been here long enough. It isn't given because they showed up once in a while. And it certainly isn't guaranteed.

Every promotion represents classes attended, skills learned, challenges overcome, and standards met.

That's why our students test for their belts. They earn them.

As we get closer to our June Belt Graduations, students across the school are working hard to prepare, and moments like this remind us why the journey matters.

Congratulations, Abby. Your hard work earned this one.

One of the coolest things about martial arts is watching younger students realize…

“I want to be like them someday.”

That’s why leadership matters here.

The older students aren’t just learning technique.
They’re learning how to set the tone.
How to encourage.
How to lead by example.
How to carry themselves the right way even when nobody is watching.

And the younger students are always paying attention.

That’s how strong cultures are built.

Kids don’t build confidence sitting on the sidelines.

They build it by moving.
Trying.
Sweating.
Falling down.
Laughing.
Getting back up.
And doing things they once thought were impossible.

That’s why martial arts works so well for kids.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is growth.

Most kids don’t lose intelligence over summer.

They lose structure.
Focus.
Routine.
Discipline.

That’s why summer matters so much.

Kids still need challenge, movement, accountability, and environments that expect something from them.

Kids are capable of a LOT more than most people think.

Sometimes they just need an environment that challenges them instead of constantly making things easier.

Hard work builds confidence.
Effort builds resilience.
Doing difficult things teaches kids what they’re truly capable of.

And honestly…
they usually end up having fun doing it too. 😄🔥

Everybody wants the exciting stuff.

The flashy kicks.
The sparring highlights.
The big moments.

But high-level martial arts is built on precision.

Balance.
Control.
Focus.
Details.

The students who become exceptional are usually the ones willing to slow down, pay attention, and sharpen the basics long before anyone is cheering for them.

That’s The Phoenix Standard.

School’s out…

…but growth doesn’t stop for the summer.

Kids still need:
Structure.
Challenge.
Movement.
Confidence.
Positive leadership.

Summer can either sharpen habits…
or slowly replace them with screens, boredom, and no routine.

That’s why summer training matters. 🔥

A lot of parents enroll their child hoping they’ll gain confidence.

What they don’t realize is confidence usually shows up quietly at first.

A bigger smile.
More eye contact.
Trying things without fear.
Walking into class without hesitation.
Speaking a little louder.
Standing a little taller.

The big transformations are built from hundreds of little moments like this.
