Yoga, at its core, is not an escape from reality. It is a practice of “vidyā”—clear perception. It invites us to see what is actually happening: in our bodies, in our nervous system, in our relationships, and in the world around us. It asks us to notice where harm exists, how it is internalized, and how disconnection alters our perception.
Through sustained practice, we strengthen our ability to stay present with what is difficult without collapsing or hardening. We learn to recognize our own stress responses and expand our ability to make informed decisions. We build internal and collective resources so we can respond rather than react. When this practice is brought to individuals who have experienced trauma, healing happens. We begin to see ourselves clearly again and chain reactions happen from that place.

A sticker given to me just prior to last night’s yoga class—-perfect!!!!🙏🏻🕉️💚
Why? How so?
The second sutra of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is:
“Yogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ.”
(योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः)
Translation:
“Yoga is the cessation (or stilling) of the fluctuations of the mind.”
Meaning:
Yogaḥ – Yoga
Citta – the mind-stuff (consciousness)
Vṛtti – modifications, fluctuations, thought patterns
Nirodhaḥ – restraint, control, cessation
In essence, this sutra defines yoga as the practice of quieting the mental chatter and disturbances so that one can experience pure awareness.
Soooooo…..🙈🌪️!!!

I have tremendous respect for the Yoga Prison Project through which I became certified to teach trauma informed yoga. It is fascinating to see the impact yoga has made in San Quentin!
