One of our favourite core exercises involves maintaining a plank position through a back-and-forth movement. It’s called a body saw, which seems straightforward to say. But the only way to know to know its true pronunciation is by doing it.

Making consistency easy
If you’re experiencing discomfort in a movement, the solution may not be to make it easier or avoid it altogether. There’s an art to loading. And when you get it right, things get better, in spite of being harder. Actually, because of it. We’re not telling you to be reckless, but we are letting you know that sometimes apprehension or a lack of clarity will change the way you move. That’s the beautiful thing about strength training. Sometimes, the antidote is to advance, not retreat.
Forward weight-shift can light up cranky knees when you lower yourself into a squat or split-squat position. The problem is that if you begin with locked-out knees, your knees are guaranteed to move forward during your descent. But by beginning with a bend in your knee, you have the room to move keep your shin exactly in place. And if your knees feel great? We recommend training this skill because… You never know.
Quick tip for knee health: be able to stabilize your shin in order to prevent forward weight transfer as you lower in any kind of single-leg or bilateral squat pattern. If you have cranky knees, you will feel the difference right away. If you don’t, build this skill to ensure that you have a game plan if this issue ever comes up.
The truth about a successful exercise practice. This isn’t just a take, it’s supported by both quantitative data and expert experience. Consistency is as close to one ring to rule them all as it gets. High levels of intensity and advanced protocols all fall flat when not executed consistently. Your first job is to get it done. Only then does adding any other detail add value. Charging hard every single time is a movie version of discipline. For us, the true discipline to modify things in a way to show up – day after day, week after week, month after month. And sometimes that style of discipline is softer, more yielding, or more creative than people expect. But that style of discipline creates a platform where hard work makes sense.
