The Department of Conservation in conjunction with Ngai Tahu have announced ‘Te Au Roa o Te Rakihouia’ as the name for the Otago region’s new marine reserve network.

On 1 July 2026, five new marine reserves will come into effect along the Otago coast, protecting 308 km² (4%) of the region’s coastal marine area. These fully protected ‘no take’ spaces will help marine life and habitats recover and thrive.

DOC and Kāi Tahu will co-manage the reserves, sharing knowledge, decision-making, and on-the-ground care through a joint ranger team.

Should you have any questions please contact the Department of Conservation. Find out detailed information on these areas and the rules below.
