Tim was unable to attend our meeting on Thursday but sent in a review from his latest book in his own challenge to read a book from every country in the world - 'Motherland' by Paula Ramon

"This time we’re in Venezuela for an epic memoir by Paula Ramon. It’s a story both of the trials of family relationships and the political history and demise of the country since the 1950s. Paula’s middle class family went from relative comfort to poverty. The book discusses the rise of the populist Hugo Chávez who won an election against what was perceived to be a failing two party system (sounds familiar?).

He then became an authoritarian cult figure who many argue destroyed the country. Paula is a journalist who moved overseas to Brazil but her close family remained in the country. Her father died relatively young but her mother lived on refusing to move from the family home. Her relationship with the daughter, Paula was fractious, and she complained bitterly that her daughter had deserted her.

For anyone who has cared for elderly parents from afar knows this can be difficult but the added complication was food and medicine shortages and trying to provide for her sick mother and smuggle food/supplies into the country. Her brothers (one of them a policeman in the Chavez regime) although closer seem to think it’s the daughter’s job to look after their mum.

It’s a fascinating personal story as well as a deep insight into the history of the country. It’s a hard read towards the end as things get worse and worse, but overall a very good book.

Big & hot book club! 20 of us, so that posed some challenges...Geoff and I are more prepared for next time and it is a great problem to have. We hope you enjoyed the social chat at the end? Thoughts and ideas warmly welcome...and talking of that, welcome to Anna and Marie Ann; apologies for nearly turning you away and so glad you stayed and provided some great reviews plus the new term "non-ending".

CBBC's July meeting is this week, Thursday 9th, at My Coffee on the Bath Road, 7-9pm. Should it be too hot in our normal space upstairs we can always consider moving downstairs where there is air conditioning, though we might have to break up into smaller groups due to the seating arrangements.
No set book to read, just bring along any book of your choosing to give a short review, take questions and generally discuss. No fee to attend, just purchase a drink from the bar on your way up.

We have one space in CBBC's quiz team for this Friday at My Coffee should anyone fancy joining us for a sociable, non serious evening of general knowledge.
Topics we have covered are:
British classic cars and computer programme nonsense (Kevin)
Is it a quote from the bible or Shakespeare? and famous serial killers (Clare)
Twelve flags of competing nations in the World Cup (picture round) that are coached by a former Premier League manager (that is the link) and, as a bonus, these managers can be named (Geoff)
So if you feel that you may be able to contribute something else, eg - pop music beyond 1990 or have a Netflix subscription would be most welcome - we would love you to join us.
