Pain on the thumb side of your wrist when lifting, gripping, or twisting? It could be De Quervain’s tenosynovitis - a common condition affecting the tendons around the thumb.
It’s especially common in people who:
* Repeatedly lift children or babies
* Use keyboards, phones, or tools frequently
* Play racquet sports or golf
* Perform repetitive hand and wrist movements at work
The good news is that De Quervain’s is usually very treatable with physiotherapy.
Treatment may include:
* Reducing irritation and inflammation
* Improving wrist and thumb mobility
* Strengthening the surrounding muscles and tendons
* Activity and ergonomic advice to prevent recurrence
In some cases, Focused Shockwave Therapy can also help by stimulating tissue healing, reducing pain, and supporting recovery in stubborn or longer-term cases.

Strength training doesn’t have to happen in a gym to be effective. Building strength through simple, consistent movement - whether using bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, walking, or functional everyday movements - can have a powerful impact on overall health and wellbeing.
Functional strength supports the way we move every day, helping make tasks like lifting, carrying, climbing stairs, and staying active feel easier and more confident. It can also help improve mobility, balance, posture, and joint support while building resilience throughout the body.
Importantly, strength training is highly accessible. Effective adaptations occur when the body is exposed to consistent, progressive challenge over time, regardless of whether that challenge comes from gym equipment or everyday movement. With appropriate progression and regular practice, even low-cost or home-based exercise approaches can produce meaningful improvements in strength, physical resilience, energy levels, confidence, and long-term independence.
