Episode 14- Dementia and the help that’s out there.
In this episode of Pimms and Needles, we’re joined by Ellie McWilliam, who shares her honest and personal experience of caring for her mum, who is living with dementia.
Ellie talks openly about what caring for a loved one can really look like, the challenges, the importance of finding support, and the different activities and experiences she enjoys doing with her mum.

We also hear an absolutely amazing story about a speedboat adventure, a brilliant reminder that living with dementia doesn’t mean the fu and excitement have to stop!
Ellie shares some of the places and organisations that have helped her along the way, including Dementia Adventure, who create dementia-inclusive experiences and days out for people living with dementia and their companions.

Wag and Company, a North East charity providing friendship and companionship to older people through specially assessed volunteers and their dogs.

First Aid Essentials – Skills That Could Save a Life

Would you know what to do if someone suddenly became unwell or had an accident?

Join us for a friendly, practical First Aid session designed to give you the confidence to step in and help in an emergency. You don’t need any previous First Aid experience – this session is all about learning simple, potentially life-saving skills that anyone can use.

During the session, we’ll cover:

Approaching an accident safely – what to do first and how to assess the situation.
Someone who is unconscious but breathing – how to help and keep them safe.
CPR – including hands-on practice and how to use an AED (defibrillator).
CPR and women – including why women are less likely to receive CPR and some of the barriers that can prevent people from stepping in.
Choking – recognising the signs and knowing what to do.
First Aid kits – what you really need to have in one.
Heart attacks – including how symptoms can present differently in women.
Strokes – how to recognise the warning signs and act quickly.
Sepsis – what it is and the important signs to look out for.
And, if time allows, we’ll squeeze in a few more useful First Aid tips too!

This is a relaxed and informative session with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practise some of the techniques yourself. The aim is simple: to help you feel more confident about knowing what to do when someone needs help.

This is event is free of charge and is brought to you by Pimm's and Needles CIC and Funded through Point North 'Enriching Later Lives' fund.

Memory Stitch Collage with Sara Lusvardi design
Memory Slow Stitch

Spend a relaxing and creative afternoon Sat 7th Nov exploring the beautiful art of memory slow stitching with textile artist Sara Lusvardi.

This special workshop combines photography, textiles and slow stitching to create a unique piece of artwork inspired by a photograph that holds meaning for you. Your chosen photograph will be incorporated into your textile piece, creating a beautiful and personal starting point for your design.

Sara will guide you through the process of layering your photograph with beautiful vintage fabrics, delicate lace, antique papers, buttons, beads and other carefully chosen textile treasures. You’ll explore colour, texture and composition before bringing everything together with simple hand stitching.

You’ll have exclusive access to Sara’s carefully curated collection of vintage textiles and embellishments, giving you the freedom to choose the materials that speak to you and create something that reflects your own memories and style.

Your photograph could be of a loved one, a favourite place, a much-loved pet, a special occasion or simply a moment that holds a special memory for you. Each finished piece will be completely unique and personal to its maker.

The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with previous sewing or textile experience. No previous knowledge is required, and Sara will guide you through the techniques throughout the afternoon.

We all work at different paces, so there’s no pressure to finish every stitch during the workshop. If you don’t quite complete your piece, you’ll be very welcome to take your remaining materials home and continue stitching at your own pace.

And, of course, homemade cake and hot drinks are included, giving you the perfect opportunity to slow down, unwind, share memories, get creative and enjoy good company in our friendly and inspiring setting.

Come along and turn a special photograph and treasured memory into something beautiful that you can keep forever.

In this episode of Pimms and Needles, we’re joined by Annmarie Jones to talk about her experience as an Independent Visitor with Changing Futures North East

But what exactly is an Independent Visitor, and what does the role involve?

Independent Visitors are volunteers who build a long-term, meaningful relationship with a child or young person living in care. They provide a consistent, trusted adult presence, someone who is there to listen, have fun, try new things and simply spend time together.

Changing Futures North East works alongside local councils to support children and young people in care, with young people referred to the service through the council.
