Back in the Gym: Waheed's Remarkable Recovery After Cardiac Arrest 💪

In June 2025, Fulwood Leisure Centre member Waheed Akhtar suffered a cardiac arrest while exercising in the gym. Thanks to the quick actions of our trained team, who recognised the signs of cardiac arrest, performed CPR and used the centre's defibrillator, Waheed received the lifesaving care he needed before emergency services arrived.

Today, after a remarkable recovery, Waheed is back in the gym and exercising regularly once again.

£120,000 investment brings free swimming opportunities to Preston residents 🏊

We are delighted to announce that Preston City Council has awarded GLL £120,000 to deliver a Free Swimming Campaign, providing eligible Preston residents with free access to swimming sessions and swimming lessons.

The campaign features six targeted offers designed to remove financial and accessibility barriers, ensuring more people can experience the physical, mental and social benefits of swimming and being active in the water.

Our programmes cater for all ages and abilities, with qualified instructors and lifeguards on hand to provide support in a safe and welcoming environment. We also offer specific sessions to help ensure swimming is accessible and inclusive for everyone.

This investment will enable more residents than ever to improve their health and wellbeing, build confidence in the water, learn vital life skills, and establish healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
