I recently had the pleasure of delivering a movement and strength session with my lovely client Sarah’s son.

Sarah wants to nurture and support his interest in getting strong and moving well, and offer a healthy and incredibly beneficial alternative to screens and devices, getting him moving and using his body and making it strong rather than sitting in and looking at screens, and we all know how potentially damaging this can be for young kids.

So I was honoured to be able to show her son a full body workout routine to help him build muscle, strength, move well and build his confidence too. All you need are some resistance bands, light dumbbells and your own bodyweight and kids can benefit from a fantastic strength regime that will support their cognitive development, general movement, discipline, overall health, strength and physical growth.

I also had the family take on a little circuit at the end which tested speed, agility and coordination and offered a good laugh, healthy competition and quality family bonding time.

I also made him a little workout routine and nutrition guide to help him make the right food choices to support his development and performance in life, sport and in the classroom

It was a great afternoon and we all had a lot of fun and I hope I’ve been able to help a young person make healthier choices for their future self

The chest fly machine can be a daunting bit of kit for newbies, mainly because of the set up and its appearance.

Machines with too many things to set up can be enough to discourage beginners with low confidence and high self awareness from even starting, and even the appearance alone can put people off.

But fear not, there’s always a much simpler freeweight or bodyweight version, minimal set up, minimal fuss, can do it anywhere.

Grab a couple dumbbells, lay down and perform dumbbell flys. Keep elbows locked and slightly bent and lower all the way to the floor, this will train the pec muscles the same as the machine with a lot less faff.
