Yinstinct Yoga Yoga I have been teaching Yoga for 15 years. I also hold an Advanced Diploma in Nutrition Coaching and a Pilates Mat teaching qualification.

I support people one-to-one in nutrition and exercise. I hold weekly classes and occasional workshops in Greystones and online. I train other Yoga teachers around the world in my Certificate in Teaching Yoga for Menopause, and run a CPD in Menopause Awareness for Wellness Professionals. Teaching retreats a few times a year, which are very popular, I also love offering a blissful immersion into all aspects of Yoga in stunning surroundings in the West of Ireland. Hatha Yoga is the basis of all Yoga styles, and gives beginners and experienced practitioners an essential insight into all it can provide. My classes are aimed at bringing you towards greater strength, comfort and health, with essential focus on the healthy alignment of the joints and spine to avoid the injury that can come with a less refined practice. I teach pragmatically through evidence-based techniques that enhance the benefits of yoga for all, and especially for women who are in the throes of their perimenopause transition, or in the years beyond.

I’m very excited!

Our publisher Human Kinetics is working hard on getting Brain-Body Yoga out to the world!

This weekend in my little room Burren Yoga Retreat while teaching a retreat I’ve been working to a deadline with some structural edits from our managing editor Hannah.

It’s been a lot of hours of work, so why exciting? Because I can FEEL how they have it in their hands and are doing the amazing work that will create of our groundbreaking (and I must say, well written content) a beautiful physical actual BOOK!

Writing a book takes long (a little longer when you’re collaborating Diana May | neuro somatic yoga for chronic pain with someone in another time zone!) and when you give it to your publisher there’s sometimes a loooong pause where nothing seems to happen and the authors WAIT! But no more… The wheels are seriously in motion.

I’ve done a lot of interesting things in this room! Worked on my book Yoga for Menopause, taught private clients who simply need not to have a break in their appointments, taught sessions of ALL my trainings.

Thanks to wifi, I never really retreat myself 🫣 But these retreats are not about me, they are about my participants, and my walk to work in the studio here is about 20 seconds! Plus I have all my meals laid out for me, no cleaning, lovely walks and sea swims.

The book will be out spring 2027. My next retreat here is at the end of January. Next Yoga for Menopause starts mid January (early bird closes Oct 31st). One space left in Yoga-Plus for Bone Health starting Nov 1st, and January dates on the website. NeuroSoma Yoga training spring dates being announced soon. Weekly classes ongoing. Space for one more private client weekly. Always able to fit in a one-to-one for your specific needs.

It’s a lot! But I love it 🤗

Back in 2022 I asked Sharon Smith | Artist to take photos of me doing yoga naked.

My intention was to show that “even” yoga teachers have hangy, wrinkly bits, and our elasticated leggings that we fix multiple times during class, may make us seem to have the body we are all supposed to aspire to.

I passionately wish for us all to be transparent.
I passionately wish for yoga students to know that we teachers are not aspirational examples of humanity.

We hang, we wrinkle, we age, we fall apart, we are all on the same journey.

That wish has not changed for me.

After the yoga shoot, Sharon did something more. She used her artistry to create the beautiful moody shots you see later in this carousel.

She now calls these sessions The In-Visibility Project, photographing mostly women, mostly in midlife or older, as we are, free from the pressures to appear a certain way. Rather she photographs our naked truth, our power, our raw humanity.

These sessions can be deeply healing, powerful, and help us stay connected to who and what we are, not disconnected by our endless stress to conform to how we are “supposed” to age.

Sharon is an award winning photographer, who instils such a safe and nourishing atmosphere. Her work has developed beautifully since she took these shots.

If you are in Ireland, book in with her and find your new relationship with yourself.

🦴 One of the most common things yoga teachers tell me is that they don’t know what to say when a student arrives with a bone density diagnosis. Osteopenia, osteoporosis, a T-score they’ve never heard of — and suddenly there’s a real responsibility in the room that nobody prepared them for.

🔬 A DEXA scan measures bone mineral density and produces a T-score. That score tells you where a person’s bone density sits relative to a healthy young adult. Osteopenia sits between -1 and -2.5 — lower than average, worth paying attention to. Osteoporosis is -2.5 and below — significantly reduced density with a meaningfully higher fracture risk. These are not abstract numbers. They change what a safe and effective yoga class looks like for that student.

💡 Neither diagnosis means she should stop moving — in fact, the right kind of movement is one of the most powerful things she can do for her bone health. But it does mean her teacher needs to know what they’re doing. Which poses increase fracture risk. Which ones genuinely support bone. And how to hold that conversation with her clearly and without alarm.

👁️ If I could recommend just two daily habits to every woman over 50, these would be them. They are simple, they are backed by research, and most people have never heard of either of them in this context.

👁️ 1. Eye exercises.
Specific eye exercises, particularly those that train the vestibulo-ocular reflex, the coordination between eye movement and head position, have been shown to support concentration, stress regulation, balance, strength, and even chronic pain and mobility. The eyes are deeply connected to the vestibular system, which is the inner ear’s role in spatial awareness and balance. Training the eyes is training the brain’s ability to orient itself in space, which has profound effects on the whole body.

⚖️ 2. Dynamic balance training.
Not static balance, which is what most people think of when they think of balance training. Dynamic balance training means challenging the body to respond to movement, to unexpected shifts in weight, to different directions and surfaces. This kind of training has been linked to reduced fall risk and improved cognitive function, two of the most significant concerns for women over 50.

✨ The connection between these two habits is not a coincidence. Both train the brain and nervous system to process spatial information more efficiently. Both reduce fall risk. And both have cognitive benefits that go far beyond what most people expect from a movement practice.

💡 And here is the beautiful thing: both of these can be woven into a yoga class. They just require a teacher who knows why they matter and how to include them.
