May is wildfire preparedness month.
Are you prepared for a wildfire?
Here are some tips to help you prepare!
🐴 Plan now for emergency sheltering: Identify where you can take your horses in an emergency evacuation.
🐴 Communicate your evacuation plan: Share your evacuation plan with friends and neighbors. Post detailed instructions in several places including barn office or tack room.
🐴 Take photographs: Take several full frame and close-up photographs with detailed description of your horse. Record your horse’s breed, color, size, markings, scars and other significant features. Keep copies in different locations and in the cloud.
🐴 Have a halter and lead rope readily available: Attach an ID tag to your horse’s emergency halter with your horse’s name, your name, email address telephone number & another emergency contact number.
🐴 Make sure you have medical records on hand with vital information including medical history, allergies, emergency telephone numbers (vet, family).
🐴 Have a minimum of 3 day supply of feed and water: Prepare a basic first aid kit that is portable and easily accessible to bring with you. Also prepare an emergency kit that includes water buckets, leg wraps, knife, scissors and wire cutters.
🐴 Teach your horse how to load/unload into a trailer: It is vital that your horses are comfortable being loaded and unloaded from a trailer, a stressful situation will only add to any existing loading issues.
🐴 Keep trucks and trailers well maintained and ready to go: Check the tires, floors and hitch frequently. If you don’t have a trailer make arrangements to have your horse trailered in an emergency.
