The goal is always movement

Manual therapy techniques (massage, cupping, IASTM, mobilizations) are just band-aid solutions if movement isn’t trained alongside them.

I like to compare them to supplements when it comes to nutrition.

For some people, supplements can be more of a necessity. If you’re deficient in a particular vitamin, then a supplement can help address that deficiency.

Other times, supplements support good nutrition and add that 5-10% extra additional help

Manual therapy is the same. Depending on the case, certain techniques are more necessary to apply, but for the most part they support the ultimate goal which is progressing movement

If someone is in acute pain, they can be used to decrease levels of pain to start to introduce movement following its application

Other cases such as addressing stiffness, they can be implemented while doing a movement

In all cases, movement needs to be the main thing

also the headline was a hook, I’ve always applied manual therapy in this way. This ain’t changing in 2026

POWERLIFTERS SAVE THIS

A couple weeks ago we posted our OG athlete .sbd. He recently did a check in with us where we addressed some shoulder pain from a heavy bench session.

Here are a few of the movements we did to get those shoulder blades moving which led to an increase in range of motion and pain relief at end range internal rotation

1. Reach and row - feeling forward and reverse movement of the shoulder blades over the ribcage

2. Dumbbell Pullover - feeling upward and downward movement of the shoulder blades over the ribcage

3. Scap push ups - extending the leg on the affected left side added to the loading of the left shoulder

While there isn’t a one size fits all treatment for athletes of a specific sport, there are tendencies athletes will have just due to the repetitive nature of training and competing

You see this especially in powerlifting where both training and competing is mainly only 3 movements

When looking at the upper body, I often see powerlifters come in with tight lats and stiff shoulders. Specifically lacking scapular mobility

This makes a lot of sense due to the need to stabilize and pin down the scaps in each movement of powerlifting

It’s important that part of your programming is dedicated to movements that get you out of the frequent positions or postures you get in training and competing

This will help promote healthy moving joints and decrease risk of overuse injuries

Powerlifters SHARE THIS with a friend who has shoulder pain with benching!
