In the spirit of Revolution this weekend, here’s a belated congratulations to Peter on taking gold at Grappling Industries two weeks ago! 🥇

Peter signed up last minute for exactly the right reason - to figure it out, because there’s never really a “right” time to compete. You can always be more prepared, train a little longer, or wait until you feel more ready. And sometimes you just have to sign up, go have fun, and see what happens with absolutely no expectations attached.

It turns out, sometimes what happens is you win your division (and almost give your coach a heart attack on the first match). Congrats, Peter!!!

Quick shoutout to CAA’s newest blue belt, Derek! 💙

Derek is always somehow elusive right around the time belts go out, but we finally caught him. 😂

At Grapple Seattle, he showcased some really beautiful fundamental jiu-jitsu - technical, composed, and exactly the kind of work we look for.

More importantly, Derek is just a really great person to have on the mats. We’re lucky to have him on the team and very happy to officially welcome him to the blue belt club.

Wow. What an extraordinary day for our competitors today.

Huge thank you to Coach Leo and the entire team at Matrix Jiu-Jitsu for the support, the matches, and for always being such good people to share mats with.

One of our favorite things about kids competing is getting to watch them learn in real time. They go out for one match, something works, something doesn’t, we talk about it for a few minutes, and then you get to watch them walk back onto the mat and actually try the adjustment (and sometimes, they are literally learning as they’re rolling and listening to your guidance as a coach, which is really cool to watch).

Sometimes it works immediately, and sometimes it REALLY does not, but either way, they’re learning how to problem solve under pressure instead of needing everything to go perfectly, and there’s nothing quite like a friendly rivalry to push everyone forward.

Today was full of good matches, camaraderie, humility, kids cheering for each other, coaches working together, and competitors genuinely making each other better.

Obviously we love when our kids win, but we care a whole lot more about how they compete.

Can they listen when they’re nervous? Can they make an adjustment? Can they be a good winner? Can they handle a loss? Can they go back out there after something didn’t go their way and try again?

There was a whole lot of that today, and we are very, very proud of all of these kids.

What an absolute blast last night was! Our third adult in-house tournament was a huge success, with so many solid rounds, some really great jiu-jitsu, and a whole bunch of people willing to step up and test themselves.
A few notable mentions because there were some really cool moments:
- Jonathan, with less than a year of experience, jumped into the ultra-heavy blue belt division and SHOWED UP. He was giving up experience (and in some cases a whole lot of human 😂), but stayed technical, composed, and did some really beautiful jiu-jitsu.
-Our mom crew… Our women’s division was three INCREDIBLE moms who all have approximately 900 reasons why competing could have been inconvenient. Instead, they got on the mats and went for it and we could not be prouder of them.
- Artem jumped into no-gi after already putting in a ton of work and continued fighting through the exhaustion. He was tired, he knew he was tired, and he kept showing up anyway.
- Scott Minaglia for stepping in for no-gi - going up in weight and belt - and putting up a fight. The one thing about Scott is that he is always game and will always show up, and that’s what makes him an incredible teammate. #
And a HUGE thank you to Keetan from Matrix BJJ Academy, Will from Nova Ryu BJJ, and Elliot from Kingston Jiu-Jitsu Club for coming out and competing with us. Having people from outside gyms come in gives our team legitimate new looks, new problems to solve, and experience against people they don’t already train with every week. We really appreciate you guys showing up for us.

And finally, shoutout to the dads who stepped onto the mats because they wanted their kids to see them compete. We ask our kids all the time to do scary things - manage their nerves, try when they might lose, listen to their coaches, learn from mistakes, and get back out there. There’s something pretty damn cool about saying, “I’m going to do it too.” Leading by example is something we’re a pretty big fan of around here.

Who wants another one?! 👀

Huge huuuuge congratulations to all NINE of our adults and kids who received new belts yesterday!

We’ve spent a lot of time over the last few months working through how to be better partners - how to train hard while still training with respect and mutual consideration, how to work with different bodies and abilities, how to communicate with each other, and how to understand that being a good training partner is part of getting good at jiu-jitsu.

And it’s really shown up in the progress people have made.

A belt is obviously recognition of your own growth, skill, consistency, and work. But none of us gets better at jiu-jitsu alone. Your training partners are a huge part of your progress, and you are a huge part of theirs.

We’ve watched this group get technically better, but we have also seen them become more thoughtful, more confident, more aware, and better at helping the people around them learn… and that’s the kind of progress we care about.

Nine very different jiu-jitsu journeys, nine very well-earned belts, and a whole lot of proud coaches yesterday.

Congratulations, everyone. ❤️

From Coach Sonia: Coach Nate competed at NAGA yesterday in his first tournament as a black belt.

Unfortunately, his day ended with a knee injury. While he was still sitting there processing what had happened, he looked at me and asked, “How much time?” As in…how much time until my next match?

Because apparently he was seriously considering going back out there (obviously, the answer was absolutely not).

That moment says a lot about Nate - his grit, his competitive mindset, and his willingness to keep going. We love the heart. We will also be making sure he takes care of himself and gives that knee what it needs.

We’re incredibly happy to have Nate as part of this team, both as a student and as a coach. He brings experience, thoughtfulness, humor, and a genuine commitment to everyone around him.

Not the ending we wanted for his first black-belt tournament, but we’re proud of him for stepping out there.

A little fight-team appreciation from last weekend.

Jeff had an excellent first fight. He came into round three stronger, made adjustments, and kept building as the fight went on. That mindset - staying present, listening to your corner, and continuing to work - is exactly what we want to see.

Austin had an absolute grind of a fight and came away with the win. Nothing was handed to him - he stayed composed, kept working, and earned it.

Jorge faced an incredibly tough opponent. The fight did not go his way, but he showed so much heart. No matter how hard it got, he stayed in it and never backed down. A loss does not erase the courage, preparation, and grit it takes to step in there - and we are incredibly proud of him.

Three different fights. Three athletes showing us what fighting is really about: preparation, resilience, heart, and the willingness to keep going when things get hard.

So proud of all three of you.

Huge congratulations to Kenny on receiving his blue belt earlier this month!

This was one of those belts that couldn’t wait.

Kenny is one of those people who shows up - sometimes very elusively, because apparently we like to keep a little mystery in the schedule - but when he’s on the mats, he’s putting in real work.

He focuses on the basics, pays attention to the details, trains thoughtfully, and keeps getting better in that steady, unflashy way that actually matters a lot in jiu-jitsu.

He’s also just a really solid teammate. The kind of person we’re genuinely happy to have in the room, to train with, to learn beside, and to watch grow.

Blue belt is a big milestone, and this one is very well earned.

We’re so proud of you, Kenny. Congrats!

We wanted to take a quick second to share what is happening at Combat Arts Academy and Delridge Strength, because we know many people are looking for ways to get themselves or their kids moving, stronger, more confident, and more connected this summer and fall.

Between CAA and DS, we offer:

• Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
• Muay Thai
• Strength & conditioning
• Youth Strength training (ages 11+)
• Yoga / mobility
• Beginner cohorts for kids and adults
• Youth Classes
• Private lessons
• Family private lessons
• Birthday parties (kids and adults)
• Events (workshops, group hangs, corporate)
• Postpartum fitness classes (bring your babies/toddlers!)
• Self-defense workshops
• And a lot of “I want to start, but I’m nervous / out of shape / busy / overwhelmed / not sure where I fit” conversations.

That last part is honestly one of the things we do best.

We really, truly meet people where they are, and we care a lot about helping people start well.

Not in a vague marketing way - in a real way. We work with brand-new beginners, nervous adults, kids who need extra support, parents with impossible schedules, people returning after injury or pregnancy, athletes who want to perform better, and families who want to train together.

That means we don’t just throw you into a class and hope you figure it out. We talk through your goals, your schedule, your concerns, your body, your experience level, and what would actually set you up for long-term success.

At Combat Arts Academy, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai are excellent for confidence, self-defense, coordination, discipline, and learning how to stay calm and capable under pressure.

At Delridge Strength, we focus on thoughtful strength and conditioning - building real strength, better movement, and a more capable body without the ego or intimidation that can come with a lot of gym spaces.

We also love working with families. If your schedule is chaotic, group classes aren’t the right fit yet, or you want something you can do with your child, partner, or family unit, family private lessons are an option for all ages.

If you’ve been thinking about starting something - for yourself, your child, your family, or someone you love - book a 30-minute conversation with me. We’ll talk through what you’re looking for and figure out the best next step together.

No pressure. No weird sales pitch. Just a real conversation about what would actually help.
