On Easter Monday 1847, the gates were opened to the very first publicly funded park in the world. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton - Birkenhead Park was created to be the People's Garden - a place where the lowliest peasant to the British Monarch could stand together to enjoy a piece of the countryside in the middle of the city. In 1850, Fredrick Law Olmstead visited the park and with its inspiration, then went on to design and create what is arguably the most famous public park in the world - Central Park New York. In 2004 Birkenhead Park underwent an £11.8million restoration return it to its former glory. Today, Birkenhead Park is a Grade I listed landscape and carries the prestigious Green Heritage Award. It caters for all visitors with a number of sports such as Football, Cricket, Bowls, Angling and cycling, as well a visitors centre and access to some of the original structures around the park.

A great turnout for our lake clean-up last weekend, and good to see some new faces! 🩵

The group got stuck in with the nets and removed a HUGE pile of duckweed. What’s left will spread out again, so the lake might not show just how much hard work went into it, but that pile certainly does!

Plenty of hard work and laughs with a brilliant bunch. Some had to head off before the photo for work and other commitments, so a big thank you to everyone who joined us.

Our next steering group meeting will be 26th September at the Visitor Centre 11am - everyone welcome!

Our volunteers have been tidying up the Herb Garden recently, which is looking brilliant, as well as continuing work around the Figure 8 Lake and tackling plenty of other jobs along the way!

✏️ A belated happy 10th birthday to Wirral Urban Sketchers!

We had the pleasure of welcoming the group to Birkenhead Park a few weekends ago as part of their celebrations.

Wirral Urban Sketchers brings together people of all abilities to sketch in and around the Wirral.

We loved seeing the park captured on paper and hope to welcome the group back again in the future! 🎨🌳

Our Heritage Open Days gallery exhibition is now open! 🖼️

Visit us from today until the 20th of September to explore a fascinating collection of historic photographs and discover more about the park’s past.

A huge thank you to Wirral Archives for storing the collection for us, and to Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead Reference Library, the Glyn Holden Collection and Birkenhead Photographic Society for kindly permitting us to reproduce the images.

🎨 Colouring Competition Winners! 🎨

We had so many fantastic entries to our colouring competition, and choosing our winners was NOT easy!

🏆 Adult winner – Geoff (age 71)
We loved the thoughtful use of colour throughout this entry, bringing the different landscapes and habitats of the Wirral to life and making the whole poster really stand out.

🏆 Children’s winner – Lucas (age 8 )
Lucas wowed us with his vibrant, creative patchwork of colours which reminded us a little of Elmer the Elephant! A brilliant example of thinking outside the box. 🌈

There was so much to love across all the entries, from incredibly detailed and carefully researched species colours, to beautiful interpretations of the peninsula and its different habitats, expressive line work, bold rainbow designs, and even an actual golden plover! ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, we had entries of all generations this year which was fab, and it’s been a pleasure looking through every single one!

If you didn’t win this time, you can collect your poster from the Visitor Centre, along with a small token to say thank you for taking part 💚

🌳 Meet September's tree of the month...

At first glance, you might think there’s something wrong with the unusually pale, mottled leaves of this tree, but take a closer look! This is a variegated sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus).

🌿 So, what is variegation?

Most leaves appear green because they contain chlorophyll, the pigment plants use to capture light for photosynthesis. In variegated plants, some areas of the leaf contain less chlorophyll than others, creating patches, speckles or splashes of paler green, yellow or cream.

🌳 On this tree, the effect occurs throughout the canopy, giving the whole tree a noticeably lighter appearance, making every leaf look a little bit different.

☀️ The green bits are doing more of the work!

Because the palest areas contain less chlorophyll, they aren’t as efficient at photosynthesis. Variegated plants therefore have less chlorophyll overall than completely green plants, and some can grow more slowly as a result.

🔎 Variegation is a great reminder that even trees of the same species don’t always look exactly alike. Next time you’re in the park, see if you can spot this particularly distinctive sycamore – its pale, patterned canopy makes it stand out from its neighbours!

🎣 Our next Angling Steering Group Meeting will be Saturday 26th September, 11am at the Visitor Centre.

We'll be discussing plans moving forwards and reflecting on the work we've done this season.

More amazing work by our wonderful volunteers on the Figure 8 lake recently.

The group have been continuing to cut back bramble, and adding fresh wood chip to the pathways and making them safe for us to begin welcoming school children again soon for pond dipping sessions!

They also tackled some dead saplings, removing them and making way for future tree planting!
