Last Saturday Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club held a long overdue friendly club tournament.
The sun shone favourably on us and a good afternoon was had by all. We played mixed doubles throughout the afternoon, only stopping for a much deserved tea break to replenish our energy with tea and cake.
The eventual winners were Sandie and Malcolm, getting the better of Michelle and Derek in the final.
The day was topped off by a court side American supper and a chance to socialise as the late summer sun (and Pimm’s) kept our spirits high through til dusk.
Thanks to all who came and especially to our Chairman John who we honoured for his sterling work throughout the difficult pandemic days.
Here’s to more tennis next year! 🎾❤️
Lovely summer’s day to be on court.
Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club is pleased to announce that we are open for the 2021 season.
We are a members only lawn tennis club. At present, we are not able to offer mix-ins, but members are able to book courts in accordance with government restrictions. As these restrictions lift, we are hoping to get back to our usual running to offer more playing opportunities.
Previous members should have received an email from the membership secretary regarding joining. If not please message here.
New members are always welcomed with (socially distanced) open arms so please do get in contact.
Hope to see you on court soon!
Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club is a small LTA affiliated tennis club with two grass courts located in the lower green in Ethelburt Avenue. We welcome all standards of players including beginners and juniors who are able to make use of the courts, take part in mix ins with other members and play in friendly matches with other local clubs. As part of their membership juniors are entitled to 6 free one hour coaching lessons with an LTA registered coach. Coaching can also be arranged for adult beginners and improvers. For details of subscriptions please see our website at: www.swaythlingtennis.org.uk
In a normal season play would start at the end of April, or beginning of May depending on the weather. However, due to the coronavirus outbreak start times for playing tennis are provisional at the moment. The LTA have suspended coaching until 20th April. At the time of writing the advice on playing tennis from the LTA quotes the Government guidelines that recreational activity can continue provided the recommended safe distance between participants is maintained. As this advice may well change contact our Chair, John Green, on 80671016 or [email protected] for the latest information.
Our annual Plant and Cake Sale and Open Day has a provisional date of Saturday 16th May starting at 12 noon, but this will only go ahead if restrictions on gatherings are lifted by then.

Hi members!
Don’t forget that tomorrow is the deadline for ‘opting in’ for the Wimbledon ballot.

Calling all members! As we do every year, we have to make sure we have packed down the club while it remains unused during the winter.
We will therefore have a working party on the morning of Saturday 5th October. If you are able to help please bring suitable tools such as secateurs, loppers or garden shears.
Any work not completed can be carried over to the last weekend, Saturday 12th October. The playing season will also extend until this date, dependent on weather. If you are playing, please be sensible and use your common sense if the courts are wet.
See you all for the working party. Many hands make light work! 👐😀
The end of season club tournament is in full swing. Lots of good tennis being played and delicious cake being eaten. And we have an avid four-legged spectator today.
On Saturday 29th June, we held the summer tournament. It was a glorious afternoon with Claire Buckley and Malcolm Riddle ending up as winners. This is the tournament where we collect money for our chosen charity, Wessex Cancer Trust. Those present, including a number of visitors, as a reward for making a contribution enjoyed a cream tea with strawberries. Many thanks to Sarah for the strawberries, Jen for the cream, Evelyn for the home made jam, Sue for the scones, and Linda for the lemon cake. Thanks also to Malcolm and Evelyn for the excellent organisation.
Don't forget, today is the 'Strawberry Cream Tea' Mixed Doubles Tennis tournament. Please arrive at 1pm for a 1.30pm start. This is open to all club members. This includes adults and teenagers happy to play tennis with adults. Hopefully, you have signed up already! There is an entry fee of £2 per person, payable on the day, to fund prizes.
Scones with strawberries and cream will be served during the afternoon with donations to SLTC's chosen charity Wessex Cancer Trust gratefully received. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the charity shortly before or after the tournament would be very welcome to do so.

Last Saturday gave us the opportunity to bask in glorious sunshine for the end of season club tournament.
Many thanks to all members who took part and to those kind enough to bake so that we had a cake-based energy boost midway through the afternoon.
Huge thanks to Malcolm for organising the tournament.
Congratulations to Jen and Malcolm who emerged victorious in a closely fought final!
The weather looks good for the next few weeks, so here's hoping we see you on court again before the Autumn closes in.
Thanks to everyone who helped out on our Annual Plant and Cake Sale on Saturday 12th May.
It was a huge success - despite the drizzle making an unwanted appearance in the afternoon - and through everyone's generosity, we managed to raise a hefty £207.50 for club funds.
Many thanks to all who came and everyone else who supported in other ways such as baking cakes or helping in the preparations.
Today is the day! Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club Open Day.
Including the Annual Cake and Plant Sale!
Cakes! Plants! Books! Tennis! Something for everyone!
Come along and support
And we're on court! More tennis this afternoon for the mix in from 2pm. Bring your Factor 50 and enjoy the sunshine!
Today's the day! The sun is shining, the grass has been cut and the whites have been pressed (2 out of 3 ain't bad) so it's officially the start of the tennis season! Let's get on court! 🎾❤️☀️
Action stations at Lawn Tennis Club. Lots of pruning, edging and flapjack eating. Chairman John led by example!
The forecast is good through into next week. Let's have more sunny, warm weather to dry those courts out! We'll have a great canvas to work with for the start of the season on Saturday 28th April! 🎾☀️❤️
We may have had biblical rain last night, but we have to believe that someday it will stop raining. In readiness for that fabled time, we got the hoses and sprinklers out to test for the new season! Bring on next week's heatwave! 🤞
Happy April everyone! The grass is looking green and (if the rain eases off) we'll be playing on the hallowed Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club courts later this month.
Keep checking for more updates and a court countdown!
Good news.....Our annual Plant & Cake Sale raised around £200 for Club funds. Thank you to all who donated items to sell and offered help at the event which coincided with our Great British Tennis Weekend Open Day.
HOT NEWS - Following the recent AGM, Junior subscriptions have been held at just £20 for the season. So come on boys and girls. There's really no excuse and you get to play on real grass!
At the Club's AGM on 24th February this year's Committee was elected and new subscription rates set. Do visit the Clubs website for full details www.swaythlingtennis.org.uk
We are hoping at SLTC to make more use of the Club's page in the weeks and months to come. Do tell us what you would like to see on the site to help improve your tennis club membership experience.
A great Early Season Tournament last Saturday. Well done to Jack Somers and Colin Priest, the worthy winners. Well done too to Katie Isham and Malcolm Riddle who were runners up. Finally thanks to the Met Office for getting the forecast wrong to enable us to complete all the matches in the dry!
Welcome to our new SLTC page. How exciting I hear you say! The other news is that we have a brand new web site at the usual address www.swaythlingtennis.org.uk
