Make sure you get your sleep right! You could be leaving gains on the table

You don’t produce wrestling power like this on low carbs.

Look at what actually happens during a wrestling exchange.

An explosive shot.

Hard acceleration into your opponent.

Isometric pulling and gripping.

A second drive when the first attempt gets stopped.

Then potentially another scramble seconds later.

The initial explosive effort relies heavily on the phosphagen system, using stored ATP and phosphocreatine to produce energy extremely quickly.

But those stores are limited.

As those hard efforts repeat, carbohydrate becomes increasingly important, with muscle glycogen providing fuel for rapid ATP production through glycolysis.

And that’s where a lot of combat athletes get it wrong.

They want explosive wrestling.

They want better conditioning.

They want to maintain pressure for an entire round.

But they’re simultaneously cutting carbohydrates because they think eating less is automatically going to make them perform better.

It won’t.

If carbohydrate availability is too low, you can compromise the ability to repeatedly produce high-intensity efforts.

You might still have plenty of power for the first exchange.

The question is whether you can reproduce it on the fifth, tenth and twentieth exchange.

That’s why I don’t just look at someone’s calories.

I look at what they’re training for and when they need the fuel.

Hard wrestling days should be fuelled like hard wrestling days.

Carbohydrates before training to increase availability.

Enough total carbohydrate across the day to support glycogen stores.

Carbohydrate after demanding sessions to help replenish glycogen, especially when you’re training again soon.

Nutrition isn’t separate from performance.

It’s part of what allows you to express the strength, power and conditioning you’ve spent years developing.

Fighters get told starving is discipline and cutting stupid amounts of water is just “part of the game.” it’s not, it’s just bad nutrition with a gi on. seen too many good athletes knackered before they even step on the mat cos of how they cut. if you’re still doing it how your coach did it in 2009 we need to have a word.
